Ova Bag was founded in 2018 when Kirsten Allen showed Daniela Vojvodova some of her reusable cloth bags. Kirsten had bought the bags in 2014, and after 4 years of use the bags were still in great condition. The only problem with the bags in 2014, and many others available in 2018, was the price. The challenge was obvious – how to create cloth produce bags that were affordable and widely available using high quality, environmentally conscious materials?
Made from GOTS certified organic cotton in a facility monitored by Free Trade, SA8000, and OEKO TEX, Ova Bag produce bags are an affordable way to replace the plastic bags that everyone gets when buying fruit and vegetables. Why should we stop using the free plastic bags? Scientists have recently shown that without a doubt, most plastic either never truly disappears or is incinerated, both of which are creating devastating changes for our planet. The plastic problem means that it is past time to switch to natural fibre alternatives like cotton.
Cloth produce bags made from cotton can be used ova and ova and ova again. If they get dirty, wash them. If they get a hole, repair them. If they become threadbare, cut them up and put them in your home compost. Cotton is an amazing fibre, which is why we humans have been using it for approximately 7,000 years, and why Ova Bag chose to focus on products made from organic cotton.
Slowly but surely, Ova Bag is expanding their product range to include other environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic. At the moment Ova Bag sells baskets, washable make-up remover pads, and upcycled notebooks. All of these products are made here in the Czech Republic.
